For over twenty years, the Broward Education Foundation, the School Board of Broward County, local universities and businesses have all joined forces to work toward the goal of providing students in Broward County Schools the opportunity to attend college. The BRACE (Broward Advisors for Continuing Education) Scholarship Fund raised over $660,000 in scholarship dollars in the past year, which was awarded to 180 students at a reception on Thursday, August 19, 2010, at Hugh’s Culinary in Oakland Park, FL.
BrightStar Credit Union is a long-term sponsor of the program. This year the Credit Union sponsored student Christian C. from McArthur High School helping him fulfill his college education at the University of South Florida. Congratulations, Christian and all of the scholarship recipients!
To Whom It May Concern:
To me, negotiating the purchase of a new vehicle is akin to being attacked by Aliens. That is until I was told by BrightStar Credit Union to consider contacting their auto advisor. To my surprise, the experience turned out to be more than pleasant. I contacted a gentleman named Roland Gonzalez who not only worked hard to find me the car I wanted, at a fair price, but was also, a kind, considerate man. No matter how many times I called Roland, he returned my calls promptly and attended to my wants and needs. Not only did Roland do a lot of telephone calls and leg work, he also stayed with me during the final process with the financial advisors. He was able to turn something that I consider to be a negative experience into something very positive.
All too often people write letters of complaint. However, I feel it is important to also write a letter when an experience is made pleasant. I thank Roland for being there for me and I have already recommended him to a friend. What better compliment could there be?
The new school year brings a new classroom setting, with different teachers and new classmates. When a family knows what to expect, things are less scary for the kids, and a lot easier for the parents. We found an interesting article, on Sun-Sentinel.com for families with some great back to school tips.

It’s August, you know what that means summer is winding down and vacations are coming to an end, signaling that back-to-school time is upon us. Parents and children alike scan newspapers and websites looking for sales to shop for a whole host of school supplies and the latest clothing craze. $7.2 billion was the amount of money spent last year in August at family clothing stores. (Source: U.S. Census Bureau) Back-to-School Shopping can be expensive, but we have some tips to help keep the costs down.
- Make a complete list. Include clothes and school supplies. Obtain a supply list from your child’s teacher, school, or a generic list from a retail store.
- Take inventory. Include both new and used items you already have in the house. You will be surprised at how many supplies you can check off your list just by going around the house.
- Create a detailed budget. After you list everything you think you will need to purchase and have crossed off all the items that you found around the house. Begin calculating the approximate cost of each item.
- Track your spending. Keep your receipts and tally your purchases each time you shop. In order to stay within your back-to-school budget, you need to know how much you have spent.
It’s never too early to develop good spending habits. Ask for your child’s input when making the budget and you will craft a wonderful teaching opportunity.
