Meet Alvin Davis, Finalist for Broward Schools’ Teacher of the Year
Alvin Davis, Miramar High School
We’re spotlighting one teacher finalist per day leading up to the Broward Schools Teacher of the Year winner announcement on February 16th. Today’s star teacher is Alvin Davis from Miramar High School.
Each year is an exciting new adventure in Alvin Davis’s classroom at Miramar High School. As a music educator for the past 10 years, he believes that it is not enough to just teach music, he also reinforces the skills learned in other classes. His objective is to develop an award-winning, academic- focused music program on the cutting edge of creativity and band pageantry. As his students will tell you, he focuses on three areas: academics, discipline and musicality.
Thanks to Davis’ support, for the past three years every student that was a regular participating member of the Miramar Band Program has been accepted to a post-secondary education institution or program. In order to do this, he put certain rules and regulations in place. Every student receives one-on-one counseling with a member of the band staff and he personally reviews a copy of every band member’s report card and interim reports. Every after school band rehearsal includes a one-hour study hall where students participate in peer tutoring and additional tutoring is provided after rehearsal as needed. He even keeps a resource library of every textbook of every class the school offers. All Davis’ students who are seniors must show proof that they have registered for the SAT or ACT in order to be allowed to perform, and by January, they must prove that they have applied to a college or university. He always strives for excellence and high student achievement.
Thank you, Mr. Davis, for the good work that you do. Congratulations and good luck!
