Meet Julia Perlowski, Finalist for Broward Schools’ Teacher of the Year

Julia Perlowski, Pompano Beach High School

Today’s star teacher is Julia Perlowski, from Pompano Beach High School. Stay tuned next week as we continue to spotlight more teachers leading up to the Broward Schools Teacher of the Year winner announcement on February 16th.

Julia Perlowski, drama teacher at Pompano Beach High School, wants her students to become responsible, passionate and committed human beings. She provides a plethora of teaching methods to accommodate every student and is always looking for ways to include creativity into everyday lessons. She believes that freedom to build your own scenarios influences creativity and in turn builds strong-minded individuals that can solve their own problems. Perlowski likes to make learning fun, using all types of technology and asking questions like “What would Hamlet’s Facebook page look like? What would be his relationship status?” By doing this, she evokes ideas in the students’ minds and helps them relate to the works of Shakespeare through modern day ideas.

Another big part of Perlowski’s students’ successes is the involvement of parents and the community. “Partner early and often” is her mantra. She is continuously encouraging parents to participate in the production of the students’ plays, as well as networking with the community to bring different generations together for a better learning experience. She believes that we must be “the change we wish to see in the world.” She teaches her students to be proud of their decisions and make their own destiny. Perlowski also enjoys sharing her discoveries and teaching with her peers, leading dozens of workshops for new and returning teachers.

Thank you, Julia, for the good work that you do. Congratulations and good luck!
