The deadline for most Americans to file their federal income tax forms is April 18, 2011. So if you haven’t completed yours yet, here are a few tips:
The IRS now offers a lot of help online and for mobile devices. Track the status of your refund by going to www.IRS.gov and clicking on “Where’s My refund?” You can also check on your refund status and get tax tips using your smart phone, by downloading the free IRS2Go app. You can even follow the IRS on Twitter (@IRSNews).
If you haven’t filed your tax return yet, and if you expect a refund, don’t forget to have it direct deposited. Direct deposit is faster, plus you won’t have to worry about a paper check getting lost or stolen in the mail. It’s easy to request direct deposit right on your tax form. All you need is your routing number, your account number and whether you want it to go to savings or checking.
For BrightStar Credit Union’s routing number click here. And if you need a savings or checking account or want to switch your account, we invite you to open one at BrightStar Credit Union. You can open a new account right on our web site.
Here are some smart ideas for spending your income tax refund:
- Think about paying down those high-interest rate loans and credit card balances.
- Invest your refund. Put money into a savings account or a CD at the Credit Union, or invest in the market or for your retirement.
- Set aside money for a vacation or the holidays—or for an emergency. BrightStar offers WISH accounts to help you save money for special occasions.
- Open an account for your kids. It’s never too early to start teaching your kids good savings habits. BrightStar also offers accounts for kids.
- Finally, think about investing in you. Take a cooking class, or a fitness class—or use the refund to pay for a college course.

It’s time for another random Good Deed performed by BrightStar Credit Union staff. This time we’re recognizing one of our local small business members, PCBrad. Our Hollywood Branch staff decided to offer PCBrad a little free recognition on our blog—plus they gave PCBrad a free subscription to Inc. Magazine. Cool, huh?
Did you know that BrightStar offers small business accounts? Yep. We do. Read more about that on our business site, www.bscu.org/business.
Here’s our profile of PCBrad:

The votes are in! We’d like to thank everyone for all the great submissions but, unfortunately we can only pick one winner. The winner of our $50 Limerick Contest is Linda I! Congrats, you are getting some Green my friend 🙂
Didn’t get a chance to read them? Check out our FB page http://www.facebook.com/BrightStarCU.
St. Paddy’s Day is right around the corner, and we’re having our first annual Facebook Limerick Contest. You could win $50!
It’s easy to enter. Just “Like” our Facebook page and then post a limerick as a comment on our wall (link below). All entries must be rated PG-13 or cleaner and posted by 5 p.m. on St. Patrick’s Day, March17th. We’ll select the best limerick, and one person will win a $50 prize. We will announce the winner on March 18th. One entry per person. Posts should be your original work (Please don’t copy someone else’s limerick.) Give it a try.
What’s a limerick? It’s a little rhymed verse. It should be 5 lines and follow this rhyming scheme: a-a-b-b-a. (This means the first, second and fifth lines should all rhyme, and the second and third lines should rhyme.) Here’s an example:
There once was a man from Sunny
Who had a problem with money.
He learned how to save
And how to behave.
Then lived a long life with his honey.
The judges don’t really have any specific criteria in mind. But we’ll probably pick the limerick which makes us laugh the most. Let the rhymes begin. Good Luck!

We recently performed another random good deed—this time for longtime BrightStar member Mrs. Elaine W. To show her our appreciation, one of our Service Agents, Diane R., presented Mrs. Elaine with a lovely plant. Mrs. Elaine said she would put it in her kitchen.
“Thank you BrightStar for providing me with uncommon service. I understand the difference between a bank and a credit union. The service that I receive from (Diane) is second to none.”
Well thank you, Mrs. Elaine, and we hope you enjoy your plant.
